A woman with brown hair styled in a loose updo, wearing a black top with lace trim, smiling and looking at the camera against a plain light-colored background.

I am a writer, art historian, researcher and educator.

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by how we make sense of our worlds through making things and telling stories.

With a PhD in Art History from the University of Leeds, I currently teach Global Art History at The Open University. I have authored Milk: An Intimate History of Breastfeeding (2023) and co-edited Asia-Art-Activism (2023).

Beyond academic work, I write for outlets like The Observer and Hyperallergic, and have received recognition for my creative non-fiction. As an editor and teacher of creative writing I specialise in helping people at all stages of their writing careers shape their vision, lean into their creativity, as well as offer help with structural and line edits.  I also run online workshops and teach creative writing, specialising in helping writers at all stages refine their ideas, structure, and voice.

My work spans non-fiction, cultural histories, feminism, art, and architecture. I’ve had the privilege of working with organisations and individuals looking to tell their stories with clarity and impact. You can explore my academic work, publications, and teaching here or download my CV.

I am currently working on my second nonfiction book.

Perhaps my greatest achievement was becoming the subject of a satirical cartoon in Private Eye:

A comic illustration from Private Eye showing a woman working on a laptop at a cafe, with a person talking to her about leaving, a caption about breastfeeding. 'Milk: An Intimate History of Breastfeeding' by Joanna Wolfarth
